This post was prompted by an email I recently received from a reader. He wants to expand his knowledge of markets, business news, and economic news. He wanted to know if I had ideas on websites or sources of information. I replied with some of the references below, which I have since expanded.
In addition to news websites, I also like to follow specific people (i.e. journalists, investors, and public figures). I believe the easiest way to do this is through Twitter. As many know, I have been a fan and user of Twitter for a long time. The service has its pros and cons but overall I believe it’s a good platform for following news and writers. The journalists are particularly helpful to follow because they link to other relevant articles, videos, and podcasts in addition to their own work or work by their colleagues. Since Elon Musk now owns the platform, it will be interesting to see how the service involves and innovates in the next few years.
I hope you find the below info informative.
Websites/News Organizations
- Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg – These are paid subscriptions but in my opinion worth it. They have daily coverage, in-depth articles, newsletters, and podcasts all related to business, markets, and the economy.
- Financial Times and New York Times – These are paid as well and worth considering. The NYT has several free podcasts and email newsletters as well.
- CNBC and Yahoo Finance – These are great resources for market updates, breaking news, and specific company-related updates information, most of it free. I usually check out these websites a few times a day.
Due to regulatory compliance, I am unable to list or link to a few people that I follow. The joys of working in a highly regulated industry😊. However, do some exploring on your own. The Twitter algorithm can make recommendations for you as well or you can check out my profile to see who I follow for additional people. If you want to discuss this in more detail, you can always reach out to me.
Email Newsletters
I know NO ONE is asking for more emails but I’ve found email newsletters are a great way to learn and stay informed. I like Barry Ritholtz’s daily “Ritholtz Reads” which contains links to relevant articles. Bloomberg also has several including the daily “5 Things to Start your Day”.
There are also a number of Substack and/or Blogs that are worth reading as well. I occasionally read those but it’s not a big follow of mine. I’ve found Twitter is a good way to track and find those newsletters. There are also plenty of resourceful websites on personal finance and financial planning topics. This ranges from Morningstar, Vanguard, and Charles Schwab to name a few.
I plan to do future posts that highlight other questions that I get from clients, contacts, or followers of the blog. If you have any questions or topics that you would like me to cover, let me know. In the interim, good luck browsing!
